If you've never read Class, by Paul Fussell, prepare to be skewered. This terribly witty book exposes the pretensions and pretentiousness of the American status system, and doesn't really spare anyone or anything in doing so. (His section on Education is particularly funny to me these days, given my current coursework . . . .) It can be a little outdated at times, but overall it's held up pretty well.
If you're not up for reading the whole book, though, I suggest you try playing Reading Class, a cute little web quiz-cum-game-cum-blog which will tell you just how classy you are. I plan to play it a couple of times until I get to be SUPER CLASSY GIRL!!! And then I will run around and save people from wearing polyester.
