Enough With The Virtual Gap

I’m always glad to see media pieces on virtual worlds and MMORPGs, but I swear, if I hear one more person talking about how awesome it is that virtual worlds let us go walk around a virtual mall, I am going to poke out someone’s eye.  Possibly my own.

On the other hand, I thought that Heather’s example of people attending the MacArthur press conference in the real world and in Second Life was relevant, illuminating and accessible.  I’m not a fan of Second Life in general (yes, I know that makes me kind of a pariah in the academic game community) but here you can see a virtual environment fulfilling a clear, concrete need.

I also think that explaining a video game over the radio is a really funny endeavor, but also is a great way to show how much knowledge and skill it takes to understand a game genre and/or read a screen.
