Facebook, Food and Fire

As birthdays go, I’d have to give this one a decided thumbs up.

I’m still up here in the Berkshires, as I intend to be for another few days. Sadly, the bulk of the gang left this morning - we’ve just got Anthony, who’s meeting a friend in Northampton tomorrow. On the other hand, I feel like I got a bulk discount on the awesome. Our friends made sticky buns for breakfast; I have VAST quantities of birthday scotch; I got to be a sexual role model (less dirty than it sounds, I swear!). And then the boy took me for a lovely date in Great Barrington, which involved books and fleur-de-sel caramels and soy bacon. I’ve spent the rest of the evening in front of the fire with Lord of the Rings, only getting up to feed the flames or take periodic birthday phone calls. Totally rocking!

What’s awesome - and a little odd - is how many emails I’ve gotten today off Facebook. People I haven’t heard from in years are pinging me, saying “Happy Birthday!” and wanting to get back in touch. I’m wondering whether they’ve changed their interface since last year, or whether I’ve reached some critical mass of Facebook friends, or whether other people are just using it more than they used to. It’s kind of lovely, since it’s a low-impact way for people to let me know they’re thinking of me. I wonder whether this has been happening to other people for years.

For the record, thirty was a great year. I’ve been remarkably happy and productive, and I’m starting to feel like I’m really coming into my own. Thirty-one’s making me nervous; it’s somehow a more ‘adult’ number than thirty was. I feel like I ought to be a tenth of the way through my plans for this decade, and that’s nowhere near the case. With any luck I’ll be able to let go of that particular foot-shooting idea and just enjoy the next year.

And that’s that, folks! I’m off to find out whether the fellowship’s going to make it over Caradhras or have to go through Moria. I strongly suspect the latter. :)
