Random and Assorted

Someone asked me today how I feel about Hillary vs. Obama. I referenced Gloria Steinem’s op ed for, like, the twelfth time in the last two days, so I figured I should point all of you at it if you haven’t seen it yet.

I’ve also been reading the Popular Science Best of 2007 list. I’d suggest you start with the door they tested by firing cannon at it, but really I found myself enlightened and excited by a lot of what they list - especially in the engineering, green and health categories. I need to find out more about these printable solar cells, for one thing! I was, perhaps, a little puzzled by their “recreation” category, but if I just pretend it says “sports” it makes a lot more sense.

I’ve got two New Year’s projects so far, both of which I’m excited about.

First, I’m keeping a journal - the old-fashioned, hand-written kind. I found one of these “five year diaries” that Arrietty has in The Borrowers, and I was so enchanted with it that I totally had to start using it. I like it because I have to distill each day down to about fifty words, which really makes me think about what mattered each day. It also means that I might actually continue to use the thing past this week!

Second, I’m making a game in Flash. While I’m a programmer by training, I’ve never done a solo project in Flash and I really ought to, if I’m using it to teach game design. I’ve done some collaborative stuff but I think I just need to dig my teeth into it and make something on my own, beginning to end, so that I know how it works down in its guts. (Yes, Darius and Danny, this is at least partly thanks to you. I guess it doesn’t quite count as an existing game but I want to do something simple to start.)

Once I finish that project, I’m going to start planning my Arisia grant application. I just have to decide which of the two ideas I’ve got I’d prefer to execute!!

I also don’t think you folks understand just how much nothing I do. I love to laze around with a book in my hand and a cat on my lap. But I’ll do a little extra nothing, just because you suggested it. In fact, I’m going to go do some nothing right now.
