"I am building a website for a 77 year old man who is ready to share a lifetime's worth of his homoerotic artwork with the world. Some of this art is QUITE explicit. Does this require a full-blown are-you-18 splash page or not?"

Yes. Yes it does. Unless the person in question is going to thumbnail the pieces themselves so nothing naughty shows, stick rating labels on each, and trigger the "are you 18 please click yes or no" qualifier before allowing a visitor to view the image.

One intro page "yes or no" might be the easiest way to go. Still, they should put a rating on each piece. 'S a courtesy.
